Churchill Downs Inc. recently announced the opening dates for the Terre Haute Casino Resort’s latest casino and hotel via Facebook. The casino is scheduled to open on April 5, followed by the hotel opening on May 15. The grand opening celebration for the casino is set for 10:30 AM on its opening date.
The casino will operate 24 hours a day and include 34 gaming tables, 1,000 slot machines, and 9 food and beverage venues. It will be complemented by a deluxe hotel with nearly 125 rooms over 10 floors, located near the intersection of Margaret and Indiana 46 on the east side of the city.
Terre Haute Mayor Brandon Sakbun expressed excitement for the new casino while also acknowledging potential safety and transportation concerns due to the estimated 1.1 million visitors the casino is expected to attract. He also highlighted the financial benefits the casino will bring to the city’s services.
Mark Clinkenbeard, a Vigo County Commissioner, voiced excitement over the opening of the casino and expressed optimism for its potential impact on the community’s economic development.
Terre Haute will become the last major metropolitan area in Indiana to have a casino following the upcoming opening. The road to establishing the casino has faced several hurdles, including legalizing riverboat casinos in 1993 and lifting the riverboat restriction in 2015 to permit land-based gambling.
The effort to bring a casino to Terre Haute began in 2018 when Spectacle Entertainment acquired Majestic Star Casino. After several challenges, Churchill Downs Inc. was chosen to obtain a casino license for Vigo County in November 2021.
Previous efforts to establish a casino in the region were met with challenges, including federal inquiries and leadership changes within the organizations involved. Despite these setbacks, Churchill Downs Inc. is pushing forward with plans for the casino and hotel to open in the coming months.
