Gamesys Operations Limited has been fined £6 million by the UK Gambling Commission for failing to adhere to Anti-Money Laundering (AML) laws and for not meeting social responsibility standards. The company, which operates 16 online gambling websites including doublebubblebingo.com, ballycasino.co.uk, megawayscasino.com, and jackpotjoy.com, was found to have significant deficiencies in its AML policies, controls, and procedures. These shortcomings were identified during a Commission compliance assessment in May 2022.
The UK Gambling Commission highlighted several areas where Gamesys Operations Limited fell short in its efforts to combat money laundering. These deficiencies included inadequate policies to reinvest winnings, allowing customers to bypass AML checks and spend large sums of money without due diligence, as well as overreliance on third-party information for customer verification.
In addition to AML failures, the operator was also found to have shortcomings in terms of social responsibility. These inadequacies included a lack of timely risk identification related to deposit limits, insufficient measures to identify customers at risk of gambling harm, and inadequate recording of interactions and decision-making processes.
These violations occurred between November 2021 and July 2022. As a result of these findings, Gamesys Operations Limited will be required to undergo a third-party audit to ensure that it is effectively implementing its AML and safer gambling policies.
Executive Director of Operations, Kay Roberts, emphasized the seriousness of the matter, stating that the regulator’s focus is to ensure that operators are employing policies and procedures that make gambling fair, safe, and crime-free. She added that whenever failures in policies and procedures are found, significant regulatory action can be expected.
The £6 million fine serves as a warning to other operators in the industry to prioritize AML compliance and social responsibility. With the UK Gambling Commission’s continued scrutiny, gambling operators are expected to uphold the highest standards to ensure the safety and well-being of their customers.
