The ongoing discussion about the legalization of sports betting in Oklahoma has taken an interesting turn as the Chickasaw Nation has developed a mobile gaming app that could revolutionize online gambling in the state. This app, which will allow users to transfer real money, is set to be available at the Chickasaw’s largest gaming hub, the Winstar World Casino and Resort, located near the border with Texas in Thackerville.
The launch of this app could provide a significant advantage to the Chickasaw Nation, as most forms of gambling are still illegal in the state. Scott Emerson, an undersecretary for operations at the tribe’s Department of Commerce, noted that this development is completely new for the tribe.
Governor Kevin Stitt has expressed support for the legalization of online sports betting in the state, but only for licensed companies and not for the tribes. Currently, the tribe has an agreement with the government that grants them exclusive gaming rights in exchange for millions of dollars. However, there is disagreement over whether this amount is sufficient.
The app falls outside the regulations of this agreement, as federal law permits tribes to offer bingo games without additional permissions. Since the app offers games that are fundamentally bingo in nature, it is allowed by law.
The upcoming launch of the app is highly anticipated, with users expected to enjoy three electronic games in a mobile format. The app was developed by Aristocrat Leisure Limited, and the tribe’s secretary, Bill Lance, has become a member of the company’s board of directors.
Although the app is not yet widely available, it is expected to launch in January, with access limited to Winstar through geofencing technology to ensure compliance with federal law.
The issue of sports betting legalization in Oklahoma is set to be a priority at the Legislature meeting in February. However, the question of tribal online sports betting remains unresolved, as even if sports betting is legalized in the state, the tribes will only be allowed to accept in-person bets. Overall, the mobile gaming app developed by the Chickasaw Nation has the potential to change the landscape of gambling in Oklahoma.
